On January 2nd, 2009, Abelina "Evelyn" Bernardo, 80, beloved wife of the late Albert Bernardo, passed away at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Born in Fall River on March 16, 1928, daughter of the late Joseph Barata Bandeira and the late Laura (Rodrigues) Bandeira, she lived in the Fall River area throughout her entire life, and most recently lived at the RopeWalk condominiums. Evelyn attended Durfee High School, worked for many years at the Anderson Little Company, and later in life she worked part time at Weintraubs' Fabrics. She wedded Albert, who was also of Fall River, on September 2nd, 1950.
A devout member of St. John of God Parish in Somerset, a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother, Evelyn will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She dedicated her life to raising her children, and was happiest when surrounded by her family.
Evelyn is survived by her sister Cremilda (Bandeira) Costa of Staten Island NY, son Bruce Bernardo of Dighton MA, daughter Jody (& her husband William) Sullivan of Portsmouth RI, son Alan (& his wife Pamela (St. Pierre)) Bernardo of Westbrook, ME, daughter Lori (& her husband Paul) Mahoney of Somerset, MA. Evelyn was a proud grandmother of Melinda Bernardo of New York NY, Joseph Bernardo of Dighton MA, Jacob and Laura Sullivan of Portsmouth RI, Emily and Alex Bernardo of Westbrook ME, and Alison and Bryant Mahoney of Somerset MA. She was also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral Mass was celebrated in St. John of God Church, Pallbearers Bruce, Alan and Joseph Bernardo, Jacob and Bill Sullivan and Paul Mahoney brought Evelyn to her final resting place at St. Patrick Cemetery, Fall River.
