Adeline S. Carreira, age 97, formerly of Tiverton, Rhode Island, passed away in Fall River on Sunday, October 18, 2009. She was the widow of James M. Carreira. Born in New Bedford, she was a daughter of the late Frank Santos and the late Maria (Vieira) Santos. Although raised in New Bedford, she was a resident of Fall River for most her life. Employed in the garment trade for many years, she was a dress maker at the former Star Dress Company and also worked at several other dress shops. She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (now UNITE). Adeline was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and a parishioner of the former St. William's Church in Fall River. Surviving family members include her two sons, James Carreira of Tiverton, and Richard R. Carreira of Swansea, a sister, Alice Monteiro of New Bedford, nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Geraldine Andrade, who perished in the Holy Ghost fire in Fall River, June, 2006, and a sister of the late Frank Santos, William Santos, Manuel Santos, Justina Vieira, Flora Mello, Irene Fernandes and Mary Cardoza. Following a brief service on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, friends and family gathered at St. Theresa's Church for a funeral Mass in Adeline's honor. After the Mass, Adeline was brought to her final resting place at Notre Dame Cemetery.
