Albert D'Ambrosio, USNR (Ret.), 89, of No. Eastern Ave., passed away Saturday after a short illness. Husband of the late Whilamena (Catabia) D'Ambrosio, born in Fall River and a lifelong resident, Al was the son of the late Joseph and Marianna (DeBonis) D'Ambrosio. He retired from the US Navy after 24 years of service. During WW II, he served with the US Navy Ground Forces on Okinawa, and, in the Korean War, served with the 6th Fleet on the attack transport, USS Thomas Jefferson, and the USS Yellowstone. During his career, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal w/2 Gold Stars, Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Naval Reserve Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Medal. Albert was a foreman at the former Firestone Rubber Co. here in Fall River before the plant closed in 1971. He went on to enjoy a 33 year career with the maintenance department of the Fall River School System retiring as the Contract Compliance Clerk. Always involved in the community, Al was past commander of the War Veterans Council of Fall River and the Post #10 of the Italian American War Veterans of the US; plank owner of the US Navy Memorial Foundation; member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch #72 and served on the Columbus Day Celebration Committee for many years. Beloved father of Dr. Joseph A. (wife-Beth), Robert (companion-Sheila Conlon), Albert (wife-Kim) and Mary D'Ambrosio; grandfather of Joshua, Jennifer, Stephanie and Nicholas D'Ambrosio; great grandfather of Chloe and Markus; brother of the late Anthony and Ernest J. D'Ambrosio and Leona Brown. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. His funeral service was held on Thursday, May 5th in our Fall River Chapel followed by his committal with military honors at St. Patrick Cemetery.
