Alberto M. Affonso, age 83 of Tiverton, husband of the late Mary (Furtado) Affonso, passed away at home on June 20th following a brief period of declining health. Born in Fernais da Ajuda, Sao Miguel, Acores, he was the son of the late Manuel Melo Affonso and the late Maria Estrella (Amaral) Affonso. At the age of 18 he moved to the United States. In his younger years he was employed by the former Costa's Poultry Farm in Fall River. He later worked for the R. L. Germaine Construction Company for over 30 years. He was a member of Labors' International Union, Local 610 for over 52 years. After retiring from construction work he took a part-time maintenance position with the Fall River Early Intervention Program run by People Inc. until he was 72. He is survived by a son Al Affonso (wife Sandra) of Tiverton, daughter Mary Turkington (husband Van), of North Attleboro, grandchildren Michael and Elizabeth Affonso and Christine and Jessica Turkington and several nieces and nephews. His funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Theresa Church, Tiverton, Rhode Island. He was laid to rest at Notre Dame Cemetery. In Alberto's memory, donations can be made to your favorite charity.
