Alfred C. Nunes, age 93, of Fall River, passed away Monday, May 4, at St. Anne's Hospital. Husband of the late Emma (Belanger) Nunes. Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Manuel and Victoria (Cordeiro) Nunes.
A lifelong resident of Fall River, Alfred attended the William S. Greene Elementary School and Henry Lord Middle School. In 1942 (WW II), he was drafted into the US Army and served in the European Theatre where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.
A Fall River firefighter, he served as a dispatcher for 27 years. During his career, he earned numerous citations for his work on many large fires, especially Notre Dame Church and the Borden Mills. He also ran a cleaning service with his late wife.
In the early 50's, Fred played soccer for the Ponta Delgada team which won the US National Amateur Championship in 1952-53. Although offered a professional contract, he opted for the fire department instead.
A 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Alfred was an accomplished duckpin bowler and loved to entertain. He played the switchboard, bugle, guitar, harmonica, accordian and loved to sing and dance to country music.
He will be missed by his daughter, Ruby Madeline Wagner; grandsons, Brian and Keith; 4 great grandchidren; a great great granddaughter; many nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Ernest, Manuel, William, Carol and Peter Nunes, Mary Chaves, Jennie Gaudreau, Angie Moran, Rita Lafleur, Lucy Fazzina and Mary Botelho.
As per his wishes, his funeral was private.
