Antonio Carvalho, 94, of Somerset, husband of Maria Lourdes (Camara) Carvalho, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, August 18, 2023 following a brief illness. Born in Aflitos, Fenais da Luz, Sao Miguel, Acores, he was a son of the late Manuel Carvalho and the late Rosa (Costa) Carvalho.
Prior to his retirement he worked as a foreman for Salah and Pecci Construction for many years. He loved gardening and traveling, especially to Sao Miguel, and to other such places as Brazil, Puerto Rico, California, Washington, and Canada. But what Antonio enjoyed most was spending quality time with all of his family.
Antonio was a long time member and director of Our Lady of Light Society. He was co-founder and president for 19 years of Our Lady of Light Band. He was very involved in the Great Feast of The Holy Ghost New England serving as president and in other capacities. He was a recipient of the 1999 Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce John S Brayton Jr. Memorial Award for outstanding community service. He also received various citations from Massachusetts State House for outstanding work in the Portuguese community.
Besides his devoted wife of seventy-one years, he leaves his loving children, Mary L. Silva and her husband, Luis, of Swansea, Evelina F. Amaral and her husband, Jose, of Assonet, Ercilia Costa and her husband, Carlos, of Somerset, and Manuel A. Carvalho and his wife, Susan (Heaney), of Swansea; his seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Burns (Jason), Caroline Varteresian (Jacob), Karen Tavares (Eric), Joseph Amaral (Kristy Almeida), Richard Amaral (Rebecca), Margaret Carvalho, and Antonio Carvalho (Kaela); thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; his sister-in-law, Carmina Carvalho; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Manuel Carvalho, Maria (Carvalho) Costa, and Luiz Carvalho.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, August 23rd, at St. John of God Church in Somerset followed by his committal and entombment at the Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum in Fall River. In lieu of flowers kindly consider a donation in Antonio's memory to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude PL, Memphis, TN 38105.
