Antonio Goncalves, age 93, of 142 Jencks Street in Fall River, passed away accidentally on Saturday, April 3, 2010. He was the husband of Maria C. (Amaral) Goncalves. Born in Beira Alta, Portugal, on April 3, 1917, he was a son of the late Jose Goncalves and the late Maria Jose (Milheiro) Goncalves. After residing in Portugal for 43 years, he immigrated to Fall River with his family in 1960. Five years after their arrival here in this city, Antonio and his family were naturalized as citizens of the United States in a group ceremony in 1965. He was employed for many years as a construction laborer with the former Montaup Sand & Gravel Co of Swansea and was a member of the Laborer's Union, Local 610. Antonio was a veteran of the Portuguese Army and was an avid soccer fan. He especially enjoyed following the matches of his favorite team, 'Sporting Lisboa", the Sporting Clube de Portugal. He was a communicant of Espirito Santo Church in Fall River. In addition to Maria, his wife of 70 years, surviving family members include a son,  Dionisio M. Goncalves of Fall River, three daughters, Helena Faria of Cape Cod, Maria Silvina Oliveira of Fall River and Cristina Barboza of California, a sister, Filomena Pais of Portugal,  eight grandchildren, David Goncalves, Mark Faria, Diana Faria, Susan Walker, Kimberly Oliveira, Andrea Barboza, Melissa Barboza and Marc Barboza, four great grandchildren, Joshua, Amelia, Brian and Rebecca, and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Anibal Goncalves, Graciano Goncalves, Manuel Goncalves, Dinis Goncalves, Carlinda Cunha and Maria Feliz. His funeral Mass was celebrated in Espirito Santo Church, Pallbearers David Goncalves, Marc Paul Barboza, Mark Faria, Robert Walker, Steven Gouviea and Jamie Almeida brought Antonio to his final resting place at St. Patrick Cemetery in Fall River.
