Obituary

Augusto Lopes of Fall River, MA, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2020, at the age of 87. After several months of declining health, Augusto died peacefully.

Augusto was born in Trutas, Vila De Rei, Portugal, a son of Jose Maria Lopes and Luisa Helena Pires, and was the youngest of four siblings. In 1974, along with his wife and four young children, he emigrated to Fall River, MA.

Already at the age of 14 he had decided to become a tailor, a trade that carried him throughout his life, including his many years working at Woodland Manufacturing formerly of Fall River.

After his retirement, Augusto and his wife loved to spend time in Vila De Rei. Whether it was in Portugal or Fall River he always looked forward to the visits from his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his loving wife of 63 years, Maria do Ceu (Menino) Lopes, he is survived by four children, Joe Lopes (wife Nely) of Westport, Alice Costa (late husband Alvin) of Tiverton, Isabel Kochman (partner Paul Jennings) of Westport, and Jack Lopes (wife Diane) of Millis – as well as his seven beloved grandchildren, Lindsey Costa, Rachael Costa, Catrina Lopes, Jillian Lopes, Justin Kochman, Alyssa Kochman, and Jenny-Lee Lopes. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Augusto was preceded in death by his brother, Francisco Pires Lopes, a Jesuit Priest, and two sisters, Maria da Conceicao Pires Lopes Igreja and Maria Helena Pires Lopes Regageles.

Due to the COVID pandemic, Mr. Lopes was laid to rest on Wednesday, December 2nd, with a private committal service at St. Patrick Cemetery. When the current crisis allows, his family is planning to celebrate his life with a Memorial Funeral Mass, the details of which will be announced here.
