Carlos Francisco Barbosa, husband of the late Leonora (Leonardo) Barbosa, with whom he was married to for 20 years, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Catholic Memorial Home after a long illness. Carlos was born in Nordeste, Saint Michael, Azores and was a son of Luisa Maria (Morreira) and the late Carlos M. Barbosa. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brother, Mario Jorge Barbosa (wife-Maria) of Swansea; his nephew, David Anthony Barbosa; his niece, Sarah Elizabeth Barbosa; his many cousins and his father-in-law, Humberto Leonardo; Carlos also leaves his brother- in- law Steven Leonardo, and Steve's children, Tracy Leonardo and Timothy Leonardo (who is also Carlos's godson); Tracy's daughter, Ella Rose DiCesaro and his wonderful friend, Helen Silvia of Tiverton.
Carlos was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School. He earned a degree in History from the former SMU, now UMass Dartmouth, and then continued his education at Boston University where he earned his Master's Degree in education. Carlos was a teacher in the Fall River Public School System. He also taught the migrant program for many years. Carlos had also served in the U.S. Navy Reserves for 6 years. Carlos was a member of Saint Bernard Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9911. The family extends their gratitude to the staff of Master Peace Home Care, Compassionate Hospice Care, Catholic Memorial Home, and Crawford Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Carlos's memory to the John Correiro Scholarship Fund, by mailing a check to 1 Government Center , Fall River MA 02722 written out "City of Fall River" and put Scholarship Fund in the Memo line or a donation can be mailed to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, PO BOX 845945, Boston, MA 02284-5945. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, December 7th, in St. Anthony of Padua Church followed by his committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
