Carlos M. Sousa, 58, of Pleasant St, husband of Dorna (Simmons) Sousa, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Born in St. Michael, Azores, son of the late Fernando and Wanda (Sousa) Morais, son-in-law of Gladys Machado of Swansea, he emigrated to Fall River in 1969 and proudly became a US citizen some years later. Employed for 21 years at Arkwright Finishing then for 10 years at Swan Finishing, he was currently working in the maintenance department at BCC for the past 6 years. Having experienced a poor, sad childhood, Carlos was determined for his sons to have everything that life had to offer. He lived for his sons and was very proud of them both. He was also a devoted lover of his cats, Pee Wee, Pudgy and Miss Callie. An avid soccer fan, his favorite team was Sporting. He was also a fan of the Colts and the Orioles – and he enjoyed Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun. He was a personal friend of all whom he knew. Besides his wife, of 36 years, he is survived by: sons, Richard Carlos Sousa (and his wife, Ann) of Fall River and Dr. Jason Carlos Sousa of Chapel Hill, NC; granddaughter, Fallon Rose Sousa; sister, Fernanda Brasil of Warwick, RI; stepbrothers, Raul & Fernande Morais both of Fall River, and John & Joe Morais both of Tiverton; several nieces, nephews and godchildren. Brother-in-law of Randy & Larry Machado and the late Cindy Simmons, he was also devoted nephew of Joyce Berryman of Fall River and Constance Petty of Westport. His Funeral Mass, celebrated by Father Manuel Ferreira and assisted by Deacon Thomas Souza, was offered on Saturday (2/16) in Espirito Santo Church. Committal services followed at Notre Dame Cemetery. Pallbearers were Armando Sousa Brazil, Randy Berryman Machado, Emanuel Almeida, Johnny and Kenny Silva and Mark Audette. Donations in his memory may be made to an animal shelter of one's choice.
