Obituary

Carlos M. Tavares, age 64, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 18, 2010, at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts. He was the husband of Oriana M. (Amaral) Tavares of Fall River. Born in the village of Achadinha Nordeste, on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, he was a son of the late Antonio Machado and the late Gilda Tavares. A veteran of the Portuguese Army, he was employed as a Police Officer in Sao Miguel upon his return from the War in Angola. After residing in Ponta Delgada for seven years he moved to Fall River in 1977 and was employed for many years as a painter with the Nunes Construction Company of Bristol, RI. He was a communicant of Good Shepherd Parish Church in Fall River and was also a parishioner of the former Our Lady of the Angles Church. In 2007, Carlos was naturalized as a citizen of the United States. He enjoyed the soccer games of Sport Lisboa e Benfica. In addition to Oriana, his wife of forty years, surviving family members include his three children; MarcoTavares, Carlos Tavares and Fatima Tavares, all of Fall River; four brothers, Jose Bento of East Providence, RI, Luis Machado, Jorge Machado and Floriano Machado, all of Fall River; five sisters, Berta Rocque of Fall River, Dora Aguiar of Westport, MA, Fatima Alves and Celeste Velho, both of Fall River, and Dina Dias of Westport; two granddaughters; Oriana Abrantes and Savannah Tavares, both of Fall River; and many nieces and nephews. His funeral Mass was celebrated at the Good Shepherd Parish Church. He was laid to rest at Notre Dame Cemetery.
