Daniel Tavares, 90, of Swansea, formerly of 4077 County St, Somerset, husband of Emma (Franco Mendoza) Tavares, died October 2, 2008 after a short illness at Somerset Ridge Center. Born in Fall River, son of the late Manuel & Margaret (Raposa) Tavares, he resided in Somerset for most of his life. Prior to retiring in 1985, he owned and operated Tavares & Son ARCO service station on County St in Somerset for 28 years; and was then a bus driver for SRTA for many years. Having served in the US Army for a short time, he was a member of the Somerset AMVETS. He was a lifetime member of Somerset Progressive Club; and was also an active member of the Somerset Democratic Committee. Besides his wife of 69 years, survivors include: children, Lawrence Franco Tavares (his wife – Carole) of Jacksonville FL, Michael Daniel Tavares (his wife – Deborah) of Dighton MA, Jo Ann Rapoza (her husband – Joseph) of Swansea MA; sister, Evelyn Machado of Somerset; 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late John Tavares. His funeral Mass was celebrated in St John of God Church by Fr. Raul Lagoa. Pallbearers Michael Tavares and Michael Tavares Jr., Joseph, Matthew, and Antone Rapoza and Gerry Butterfield brought Daniel to his final resting place at St Patrick Cemetery in Somerset.
