David M. Machado, 97, of Fall River, husband of Evelyn L. (Proulx) Machado, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Manuel Machado and the late Mary (Vieira) Machado.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II before returning home to join the Fall River Police Department, where he served for 33 years, David became a titan of labor who dedicated his life to improving the wages and benefits of municipal workers.
Founder and president of the Fall River Police Association, he also served as president of the Fall River Police Relief Association and was the longest serving president of the Massachusetts Police Association, which represents law enforcement throughout the state. David instituted and founded the M.P.A. Scholarship Foundation.
In retirement, he formulated the Fall River Retirees Association. He also served as director and vice chairman on the board of directors at the Fall River Municipal Credit Union and served on the Fall River Retirement Board for 26 years.
Besides his wife of 71 years, he is survived by: two sons, David J. Machado and Kevin A. Machado both of E. Freetown; a sister, Delores Sampson of Somerset; and several nieces and nephews. David was also the brother of the late James M. Machado and the late Edward M. Machado.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, October 7th, in Espirito Santo Church followed by his committal with military honors at St. Patrick Cemetery.
