Dimas M. Camara, age 92, passed away in Fall River on Friday, October 16, 2009, following an extended illness. He was the beloved husband of Alice (Reis) Camara. Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Manuel M. Camara and the late Elena (Estrella) Camara. A World War II Veteran of the United States Army, he enlisted in October 1942 and was assigned to the 85th Infantry Division after basic training. His unit was deployed on Christmas Eve of 1943, arriving in Casablanca on January 2, 1944. Nicknamed 'Custer' the 85th Infantry Division would see 260 days in combat and suffer 8,774 casualties. The 'Custer' Division supported campaigns in Italy, France and Germany. A lifelong resident of Fall River, he was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Works as a supervisor with the Division of Highways and Bridges. He was a member of the Supervisor & Foreman Association, the Knights of Columbus Father Boer Council in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and the Pine Valley Seniors Golf Association. Dimas was a communicant of Holy Name Church in Fall River. In addition to his wife, Alice, surviving family members include his daughter, Joan E. Camara (husband Charles Jordan) of Portsmouth, RI, three grandchildren, Alexander Jordan of Washington, DC, Daniel Jordan of Portsmouth, and Brian Jordan of Fall River, a sister Olivia Levesque of Fall River, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late John Camara and the late Manuel Camara. On Tuesday, October 20, 2009, family and friends gathered for a Funeral Mass in Holy Name Church. Committal services with military honors followed at Notre Dame Cemetery.
