Obituary

Dimas Pereira Tavares, 81, of Fall River, husband of Maria C. (Miranda) Tavares, passed away at Charlton Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, after a long illness. Born in Bretanha, St. Michael, Azores, a son of the late Jose Pereira Tavares and the late Maria de Jesus (Travassos) Tavares, he moved to Canada where he lived for three years until emigrating to Fall River in 1963.

He was employed in the local textile industry for many years, retiring from Duro Finishing in 2006, and was a member of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union, now UNITE. While a parishioner with the former Our Lady of Health Church, Dimas was active with the Holy Ghost and served on the feast committee.

He loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed reminiscing and telling stories, going to the casino, gardening, playing cards, and dominoes.

Besides his wife, of 57 years, he is survived by: two children, Joseph Tavares (wife Susan) of Fall River and Michael Tavares (wife Linda) of North Providence, RI; five siblings, Miguel Tavares of Ontario Canada, Luis Tavares of Assonet, Margarida Canaveira of Lisbon, Portugal, Agostinho Tavares of Ontario Canada, and Antonio Tavares of Ontario Canada; two grandchildren, Hollie Mitchell and Noah Tavares; his dog, Diamond; and many nieces and nephews. He was also a brother of the late Jose Tavares and Maria Pereira; and grandfather of the late Malea Tavares.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, August 2nd, in Espirito Santo Church followed by his committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
