Edna Saber
Smith
d. Nov 25, 2021
Edna Saber Smith, of Somerset, beloved wife of the late Theodore "Ted" Smith, entered into rest on November 25, 2021. Born in Fall River in 1925, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lena (Latoof) Saber.
Edna graduated in 1942 from B. M. C. Durfee High School, after which she attended Herricks Business School. She was employed at Boston Jewelry and Loan for 10 years, where she became life-long friends with Harold and Hazel Ginsburg. In 1954, Edna made the choice to stay home and raise her family. In 1957, she attended Simmons Floral School in Boston, and in 1959, she and Ted opened Smith's Flower Shop on Pleasant Street in Fall River, which later moved to Eastern Avenue. Her eye for design and color were legendary, and for 40 years brides were mesmerized by the beauty and elegance of their flowers.
Edna was a member of Calvary United Presbyterian Church where, for 88 years, she enjoyed holy fellowship with her family and friends, and was a member, and, one-time president, of the Ladies Christian Unity. She was also a member of the Lebanon-American Ladies Auxiliary for many years, at one point serving as Vice-President. She was a member of the Carousel Lions; however, her membership in the Swansea Royal Travelers brought her many years of pleasure and happiness, meeting and making great friends as she and Aunt Vicky traveled all over the United States and abroad.
She will be deeply missed by her children: daughter, Marion Shaker and her husband, Robert; sons, Theodore Smith, Jr., and his fiancée, Denise Messier, and David Smith; five grandchildren, Robert Shaker and his wife, Elizabeth, Rachael (Shaker) Filipe and her husband, Marco, Monique (Smith) Womack and her husband, Brandon, Nichole Smith, and Simonne Smith; and eight great-grandchildren. She is the sister of Gabrielle Tanber, and sister-in-law of Alice Saber and Rosemary Saber who were more like sisters to her. She is also the sister of the late Elias Louis Saber, Charles Saber, Jr., and Freda (Saber) Thomas.
The family would like to offer their deepest appreciation to the entire staff at Somerset Ridge Center for all they have done for mom over the years, especially during the pandemic. We are extremely grateful.
Her Funeral Service was held on Saturday, December 4th, in Calvary United Presbyterian Church, followed by a private committal at her family lot in Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Edna's memory to Calvary United Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 4101, Fall River, MA 02723.
Family members are always grateful for relatives and friends wishing to make in-person expressions of kindness and support. If you were unable to do so, because of this pandemic or any other reason, all are urged to express their sympathy online or by mail. To ensure that said condolences and/or sympathy cards reach the family, please always make sure that submissions online are made directly through the funeral home's website ( www.silvafaria.com ) and not through a third party. Thank you!
