Emelia (Pereira Braz) Novo, 102, of Fall River, widow of Jose O. Novo, passed away at home on Thursday, October 1, 2021. Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late Jose Pereira and the late Emelia Costa. During the Depression her family relocated to the Azores where she was raised and grew up to start a family of her own, then moved back to Fall River in 1955.
She had worked in the local garment industry, at the former Shelburne Shirt for many years, and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (I.L.G.W.U.) now called UNITE. She enjoyed cooking and trips to Foxwoods.
She is survived by: three children, Frank Novo (wife Mary) of Somerset, Joseph Novo (wife Mary Helen) of Westport, and Alice Canito (husband Robert) of Fall River; 13 grandchildren, including her caretaker, John Marshall; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Mary Marshall and John O. Novo; sister of the late Alice Terceira; and grandmother of the late Michael Thompson.
Her private funeral was held on Wednesday, October 6th, with a Funeral Mass being celebrated in St. Anthony of Padua Chutch followed by her committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
