Carvalho
d. Aug 27, 2023
Floriano Carvalho, 90, of Somerset, husband of Mary E. (Abreu) Carvalho, passed away at home surrounded by family on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Born in Lomba da Maia, St. Michael, Azores, a son of the late Cesar Monte Carvalho and the late Christina (Medeiros) Carvalho, he had served in the Portuguese Army and emigrated to Fall River in 1956 – moving to Somerset in 1970.
He was a finish carpenter in the custom cabinetry business for many years and was employed with A. Caponigro of Attleboro for forty years, retiring in 1997. Floriano was a master with his woodworking and always generous with his time to help neighbors, friends and family with their various projects and repairs. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and spending time with family, especially his great-grandchildren. Floriano was a member of St. John of God Church and devout in his Catholic faith, as he would pray the rosary daily. He also enjoyed many days and sunsets on Prudence Island, RI.
Besides his wife, of almost 68 years, he is survived by: three children, Kathleen Carvalho of Somerset, John Carvalho (wife Wendi) of Swansea, and Christine Matowitz of Swansea; two siblings, Salome Sousa of Ponta Delgada, St. Michael, Azores, and Joao Monte of Kingston, Ontario, Canada; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was also a brother of the late Antonio Carvalho, Cesar Carvalho, Christina Medeiros, and Maria Amaral.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, September 1st, at St. John of God Church in Somerset followed by his committal and entombment at the Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum in Fall River. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Floriano's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; 800-805-5856; https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html .
