Obituary

Gabriel Medeiros, 72, of Westport, husband of Tina (Arruda) Medeiros, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Charlton Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Santo António além Capelas, São Miguel, Açores, he was a son of the late Jose Medeiros and the late Maria de Lourdes (DaPonte) Medeiros.

Gabriel was a loving, faithful, loyal, funny, and hardworking man from his earliest days until his final moments on earth. As a young boy, he began working at a very early age, proudly alongside his father and brother for many years. His strong work ethic and dedication stayed with him throughout his entire life.

Prior to serving in the military, he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Tina. The two were married for 50 years, building a life rooted in love, faith, and loyalty. Shortly after their wedding, Gabriel and Tina moved to Toronto, Ontario, where they started a new life together with very little, but with each other, they had everything they needed.

Determined to provide for his family, Gabriel set out to find work and quickly found his passion for construction. In a very short time, despite not knowing the language or having prior experience, he rose to the position of foreman. He worked side by side with his team in the trenches and loved every moment of it.

A God-fearing man and devoted servant, Gabriel lived his faith daily. Together with Tina, he raised their son and daughter to always put God first and to trust in Him in every situation. He was an amazing and loving father who always wanted the best for his children and beamed with pride in all they did.

In 1991, Gabriel moved his wife and children to Massachusetts to be closer to family. While he remained committed to working hard and providing for his family, he also found joy in fishing, landscaping, cooking, camping and, above all, spending time with his loved ones. He was the life of the party, always ready for a good time with the best cachaça da "Grotta da Pipa" ever made. The annual 4th of July Family Beach Party was one of his favorites, arriving before 4:00AM to be sure our family's spot was saved. Gabriel was a great friend and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Gabriel had many talents, but one of his greatest was cooking. He had a remarkable ability to taste a dish and recreate it perfectly without needing a recipe. His love language was feeding others, and nothing brought him more happiness than watching family and friends enjoy the meals he prepared. He was truly a master chef.

Family was at the center of Gabriel's life. He helped raise his niece and nephew as his own and later devoted himself to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including his great-nieces and nephews. From changing diapers to school pick ups and drop offs, to soccer games, karate classes, and everything in between, he was always present. He would do anything and everything for them.

As his grandchildren grew older, Gabriel started a small landscaping business called "Grass Coach," where he transformed unhealthy, patchy, dry lawns into vibrant, healthy spaces that looked almost too perfect to be real.

In addition to all his passions, Gabriel was an avid soccer fan, especially Sporting CP and Portugal's National Team. He followed all games closely and enjoyed spirited, friendly debates, often insisting that Sporting was unfairly denied the win due to bad calls.

Gabriel lived a full and meaningful life, he loved hard, his loyalty never wavered. He was loved by many and touched many lives. His life was rich with love, laughter, hard work, and countless adventures.

Besides his loving wife of 50 years, he leaves his children: Marco Medeiros and his wife Debra, of Dartmouth; Monica Lecchi and her husband Martin, of Westport and his grandchildren: Cyrus, Bella, Alissia and Celina; great-grandchildren: Isla, Adalia, and AddaLeia; siblings: Maria dos Anjos Cabral and her husband Nicolau, of Canada and Teresa Arruda and her husband Manuel, of São Miguel, Açores; Sister and brother inlaws and many nieces and nephews. Gabriel was predeceased by his siblings, Jose Medeiros, Eugenia Medeiros and Duarte Medeiros.
