George T. Grillo, affectionately known to all as "Grampa Grillo", formerly of Beattie Street in Fall River, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Rose (Conforti) Grillo. Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Joao Tavares Grillo and the late Mariana (Estrela) Grillo. A United States Army Veteran of World War II, he was a tech sergeant medic, grade 4. Although he saw action in the Pacific, Sgt. Grillo served primarily in Italy as a surgical technician, assigned to a station hospital with the 262nd Division. In addition to the Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal, he received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon as well as the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon. Employed for most his life as a union steamfitter, he was a member of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Union, Local 51. Upon his retirement he enjoyed vacationing in Florida with his wife Rose. An avid walker and a dedicated Red Sox, Patriots fan, he was a volunteer coach with the Columbus Little League for over 30 years. He especially enjoyed attending the baseball games & sporting events of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and his grandson's concerts and parades as a member of the Army National Guard 215th Division Band. Surviving family members include two sons, Gus Grillo of Fall River, and Paul S. Grillo (his wife Paula) of Somerset, four grandchildren, Stephen Joncas, Ronald Scott Joncas, Michael P. Grillo (his wife Suzanne) and Christopher P. Grillo, four great grandchildren, Shannon Lambert, Aaron McDermott, Shaina Joncas and Shauna Joncas, a sister-in-law, Natalie Carreiro, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Leslie Joncas and brother of the late James Grillo, John Grillo, Charles Grillo, Mary Alves, Elsie Britto, Olive Silvia and Irene Clement. His Funeral Mass, celebrated by Father Raul Lagoa was offered on Friday, October 10, 2008 in Holy Rosary Church in Fall River. His committal service followed at St. Patrick's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Louis Cabral, Michael and Christopher Grillo, Brian Lawrence, Steven Occhiuti and Aaron McDermott.
