George Tavares, Jr., age 18, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI, from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident. Born in Fall River, he was the son of George Tavares and Susana Vertentes, and the grandson of Maria Oliveira of Fall River, Gilbert Tavares of New Bedford, Maria Tavares of Fall River and the late Miguel Oliveira. A student at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, he was an automotive mechanic and motorcycle enthusiast. Although George held a great affinity of all types of motorcycles he also enjoyed off-road quadding with his friends. In addition to his parents and grandparents George leaves a brother, John Vertentes of Fall River, his five elder sisters that he adored, Shannon Knight, Stephanie Vertentes and Tanya Ramos, all of Fall River, Tara Tavares of New Bedford, and Jade Souza, also of Fall River, three nieces and two nephews. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, August 1, in Espirito Santo Church followed by his committal at Oak Grove Cemetery.
