Germano Cardoso, in his 87th year, of Assonet, MA, husband of Maria Alice (Ribeiro) Cardoso, passed into eternal rest on Sunday, June 7, 2020 at Charlton Memorial Hospital.  Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he was the son of the late Emedio and Conceicao (Ferreira) Cardoso.  He emigrated to the United States in 1958 with his wife and made his home first in Fall River and then in Assonet. Germano's favorite pastimes were spending time with his family, going out for a nice dinner, dancing, and  sitting at the window in the sunshine reading, .  Germano was a talented tailor who had been employed initially by Robert Hall in Somerset and McSwift in New Bedford before beginning his 30 plus year career with Filenes (later Macys) prior to his retirement in 2005.  He was a member of St. Bernard's Parish in Assonet, MA for 35 years. He was also a member of the Holy Ghost Club of Westport, MA.

In addition to his cherished wife of 63 years, he leaves his beloved family: daughter, Linda Cardoso Camara, son-in-law Hildegar Camara, grand-daughter, Courtney Elizabeth Camara and her fiance Eric Roque.  He also leaves one sister, Maria daSilva, niece Alice and nephew Fernando all of Rio de Janeiro.  He was pre-deceased by his brother, Gildo Cardoso.  He was the dear uncle of Melinda A. Silva of New Bedford and godfather of MJ Alves of Cumberland, RI.  He also leaves his cousin Ceu Magalhaes of Acushnet, who he was especially close to.  Germano was blessed to have many wonderful people in his life, but he was particularly close to Derek Farias of Fall River and Paul and Cheryl Pacheco of Berkley, MA.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. John Gansner of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, for his tender care of Germano during his three and one-half year battle with Aplastic Anemia.  Germano fondly called Dr Gansner "Big John" and looked forward to his monthly visits with him.  The family also sincerely thanks Dr. Edress Othman and Germano's nurse, Alicia, of the Southcoast Cancer Center, for the treatment of his disease locally.  Lastly, the family would like to recognize and thank Dr. Jose Monteiro for his care of Germano and his attentiveness to him during their 30-plus years of doctor/patient relationship.

Following his cremation, his memorial funeral mass was celebrated by Fr. Michael Racine on Saturday, June 20th, in the Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in New Bedford. His mass was also be live-streamed on whalingcitycatholics.org.

In lieu of flowers for Germano, the family asks that any donations be made in his name, to the Hematology Department of Brigham and Women's Hospital, 75 Francis Street, Boston, MA 02115 in order for them to continue research to help others.

Germano's favorite phrase was "better days are coming", let that be his legacy to all.
