Gilda Sypek, 97, of Fall River, beloved wife for 64 years of the late Edward J. Sypek, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026, at Clifton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Fall River, Gilda was a daughter of the late Manuel Sousa Domingos and the late Mary Georgina Domingos.
In her early years, Gilda was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Parish. She belonged to the Women’s Guild, the Friday Night Knitting Circle, and the Knights of Columbus where she enjoyed dancing with Ed. She worked as a seamstress in the Shelburne Mills for ten years. She also worked at the voting polls where she met many lifelong friends and acquaintances.
She enjoyed summers at her West Island cottage with her family and friends for many decades.
Throughout her life, she babysat children of her extended family. She had a very loving and generous nature. She was a caregiver for many relatives. She dedicated years caring for her husband Ed as he declined in health. She was a talented knitter and enjoyed gardening. She was proud of her title as Godmother and most proud of being a Nana and a Great Grandmother. Gilda got great joy from FaceTiming with her great-grandchildren in CA. always laughing as she watched their antics.
Later in life, she continued to be socially active. She played weekly card games with wives and daughters of firemen which formed another family for her. She attended the Classy Ladies luncheons. She had many visits from her family, friends and neighbors. She had a daily visit with her beloved friend and neighbor Rosemary. She continued cheering on the Boston Celtics and Red Sox.
Many regarded her home, where she resided for 64 years, as a safe haven. She was a beacon of strength and was a confidante to many.
Gilda leaves her children, Edward S. Sypek and his wife Muriel, of California and Sheryl Zygiel and her husband Tom, of Fairhaven; three grandchildren, Ryan Sypek, Evan Sypek and Nellie Zygiel; three great-grandchildren, Lucie Sypek, Milo Sypek, and Archie Sypek; and several nieces and nephews. Gilda was predeceased by her siblings, Mary Oliveira, Georgina Mello, Manuel Domingos and John Domingos
The family also extends its deepest gratitude to the staff of Clifton Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Somerset, MA and Hospice Staff for their compassion, kindness, dignity, and care they provided to Gilda during the past ten months. Their support and dedication will always be remembered and deeply appreciated. At Clifton, she remained active, coherent, engaged and enjoyed all her visits.
Relatives and Friends are invited to attend her Calling Hours to be held in Silva-Faria Funeral Home, 730 Bedford Street, Fall River, on Monday, August 24, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
