Obituary

Heitor Miguel Medeiros Sousa, 77, of Fall River, passed away surrounded by family on February 28, 2016 at St. Anne's Hospital. Born in Rabo de Peixe, São Miguel, Azores, he was the son of the late Nicolau & Adelina (Medeiros) Sousa and beloved husband of the late Eduarda (Faria) Sousa. He is survived by daughters Nelia Oliveira (husband Agostinho) and Elsa Amaral (husband Rui), and grand-daughters Cassandra & Vanessa Oliveira, and Tanisha Amaral. He was predeceased by siblings Maria de Lurdes Vieira, Natalia Pontes, Nicolau Sousa, Jose Expedito Sousa, and Eduardo Sousa. Heitor worked for the court system in Ribeira Grande and Ponta Delgada; and was also employed at Commercial Bank of Azores in Ponta Delgada, later becoming that bank's office manager for Fall River when emigrating to the US in 1981. He was a member of various Portuguese community organizations and philharmonic bands; and was founder of the Great Feast of the Holy Ghost of New England. He received many distinctions including: Honorary Citizen Award from the city of Ponta Delgada; Special Recognition Awards from the Azorean Legislative Assembly and the MA House of Representatives; Silver Medal from the Secretary of Portuguese Communities; Merit Award from President Mário Soares of Portugal; and the Infante D. Henrique Award from President Anibal Cavaco Silva of Portugal. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, March 3rd, in Espirito Santo Church followed by his committal at St. Patrick Cemetery.
