Obituary

Helen M. Conrad, 90, of Fall River, died Friday 6/21/13 in Charlton Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Born in Praszka, Poland, daughter of the late Louis & Eugenia (Pruska) Ulatowski, she resided in Fall River for the past 50 years. Immigrating from Poland at age 4, she lived in various parts of the U.S., including Michigan where she graduated from Mackenzie High and Wayne State University in Detroit. She attended Women's Medical College in Philadelphia and later received a master's degree in biology from Rhode Island College. A devoted teacher, she was on the faculty of Bristol Community College from its founding in 1966. When she retired as a Professor Emerita 35 years later, grateful students and colleagues contributed to planting a tulip tree in front of the science building to carry her name. An incessant reader, an activist for Peace and Conservation since the late 1940s, an avid gardener, and a lover of long walks in the woods and classical music (taking up the recorder in her 70s), she was especially fond of hosting dinner parties for her friends. She enjoyed membership in the Committee for Peace & Justice, Fall River Symphony Society, and Fall River Garden Club. She leaves 2 daughters, Laura Conrad of Cambridge, MA, and Judith Conrad of Fall River, and several nieces & nephews. She was also sister of the late Danette Sayles & Louis Taylor; and former wife of Walter Conrad of Florida. Following her cremation, a Memorial Mass was celebrated in Holy Name Church on Wednesday, June 26. Memorial contributions to BCC Foundation Scholarships/Alumni & Friends, 777 Elsbree St, Fall River MA 02720, or Earthwatch Inst., 114 Western Ave, Boston MA 02134
