Helen L. "Holly" Grenn, 95, of Somerset, formerly of New Bedford, widow of Dr. Francis P. Grenn, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 11, 2013 at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Born and raised on a small farm in Lafayette, IN, daughter of the late Lee & Alma May (Tyrie) Sparger, she lived most of her life in New Bedford, moving to Somerset in 1989 to live nearer her daughter, Kathi, who was her caregiver for numerous years. A homemaker, Helen worked in her husband's medical practice for many years, was employed during WWII at Raytheon in support of the war effort, and also had a job as a nanny for some time. A loving mother and adoring grandmother, "Nana" was known for her compassionate heart and exceptional sense of humor. She delighted in solving crossword puzzles right up until her illness, and was an avid reader who volunteered in her younger days to teach children and adults how to read. Mrs. Grenn was a member of the Polish National Alliance, past president of the Polish American Veterans Association Women's Auxiliary, and former member of the Country Club of New Bedford with her late husband. Survivors include: 4 children, Francis P. Grenn MD JD (wife Antonia), of Marshfield MA, Joseph J. Grenn DMD (wife Kira) of Mill Valley CA, Marcia Green (husband Loris) of Bound Brook NJ, Kathleen L. Grenn-Silva (husband Martin) of Somerset; 4 grandchildren, Maxwell G. Silva, Elliot G. Silva, Francis P. Grenn Jr., and Victoria Holly-Louise Grenn; many nieces & nephews. Predeceasing her were all of her siblings: the late Leo, James, Robert & Homer Sparger, and Florence Thimlar. Her Funeral was held on Tuesday, 1/15/13, at 9:00 am from the Silva-Faria Somerset Funeral Home, 84 County St., Rte 138, Somerset, with her Funeral Mass offered at 10:00 am in St. John of God Church, Brayton Ave, Somerset. Committal Service / Interment at South Dartmouth Cemetery. Calling Hours were held in the funeral home on Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
