Obituary

Honorina "Noreen" Amaral, 99, of Fall River and wife of the late Antonio Amaral, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 31, 2021 at St. Anne's Hospital following a brief illness. Noreen was one of four children born in Fall River, to the late Manuel Amaral and the late Maria Encarnacao (Medeiros) Amaral.

At seven years of age, she emigrated, with her mother and three younger siblings, to the island Sao Miguel, Azores where they resided for many years. Noreen was married to the "love of her life". Antonio Amaral. The couple met and courted in Sao Miguel and later emigrated together to the United states and were married in 1947 at Our Lady of Angels Church in Fall River. The couple later moved to Newark, NJ, and, after a few years, relocated to San Lorenzo, CA, where they owned and operated their own bakery. They moved back to Fall River in the 1970's and became avid travelers. Noreen was a long-standing parishioner of Holy Rosary Church of Fall River. She was also as extremely talented seamstress. Noreen was very loving and good-natured and, in her own special way, a very funny person. Many, both old and young alike, were quickly drawn to her warm and engaging manner. This wonderful and unassuming lady, who also served as a caregiver to family and friends, was always looking to help others in any way she could. She was also a consummate cook. At family gatherings all one needed to say was "Aunt Noreen cooked a couple of her famous Portuguese dishes' and there would be instant smiles and lines reaffirming just how great her culinary skills were.

She leaves many wonderful nieces and nephews, Anthony Sousa and his wife, Nancy, Joseph Sousa and his wife, Elaine, Joanne Gendreau (late husband, Conrad), Fatima Gendreau and her husband, Mark, Donna Medeiros and her husband, Raymond; her grandnephews and grandnieces, Erica Barbosa, Mark J. Gendreau, Jennifer Alicia, Amy Teceira, Steven D. Gendreau, Brendan Medeiros, Brittany Hubbard, and Steven C. Gendreau; her great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, Lillian Gendreau,  Anthony Alicia, Elin Barboza, Madeline Gendreau, Jackson Younger, Lucas Barboza, Emma Younger, Allie Gendreau, Mark J. Gendreau, and Steven C. Gendreau; and her  sister-in-law, Hilda Amaral. She was also the sister of the late Rosa Sousa (late husband, Antonio), William Amaral (late wife, Maria) and Joseph Amaral and aunt of the late Lidia Amaral.

Noreen's family is grateful to Ana Desousa and her husband, David, of Rehoboth, MA, for providing ongoing care for Noreen and especially for welcoming her into their home during her last days.

Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, January 6th, in St. Anthony of Padua Church followed by her committal at St. Patrick Cemetery in Fall River. In lieu of flowers kindly consider a donation on Noreen's memory to: Michael's Fund, 966 Walnut Street, Fall River, MA 02720.
