Irene Vieira Simoes, age 88, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014, at the Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, following an illness. She was the widow of Gil Simoes. Born in Povoacao, on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, she was the daughter of the late Jose R. Vieira and the late Maria Jesus (Bareiro) Vieira. After residing in the Azores for forty-nine years, she moved to Fall River in 1975 and was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church. Surviving family members include a son, Gil Simoes (wife Teresa), a daughter, Maria da Gloria Furtado (husband Jose), a sister Maria do Carmo Simas, five grandchildren; Nelson Furtado, Sandy Quental, Peter F. Simoes, Cliff F. Simoes and Diane F. Simoes, and two great grandchildren; Melanie Quental and Gavin Quental, all of Fall River. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, February 15, in St. Anthony of Padua Church followed by her committal at at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
