Obituary

Irene (Arruda) Soares, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, following an extended illness. She was the wife of Louis M. Soares. Born in Somerset, she was the daughter of the late Louis Arruda and the late Gertrude (Fragoza) Arruda. After residing in Somerset for twenty years, she married and moved to Fall River. Employed in the garment trade for many years, Irene was a supervisor at the former Kim & Jim Inc. until her retirement in 1988 and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, now UNITE. A communicant of Holy Trinity Parish Church in Fall River, she was also a parishioner of the former Our Lady of Health Church and their Holy Rosary Society. She was a member of the Niagara / Maplewood Senior Center and the North End Senior Center. In addition to Louis, her husband of 65 years, family members include her daughter, Terri Barros-Baer and her husband, Douglas, of Fall River, two sisters, Gertrude Ribbing and husband, Mel, of West Warwick, RI, and Lorraine Cabral of Fall River, a sister-in-law, Emily Pacheco of Fall River, a grandson, Kristopher Barros and wife, Aimee, of Bristol, RI, a granddaughter Lauren Iadonisi of Somerset, a stepgrandson, Curt Nobel of Texas, six great grandchildren, Meaghan Barros, Marah Iadonisi, Kaitlyn Barros, Marissa Barros, Kaden Barros and Aveah Iadonisi, and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Johanna Prenda, Edward Arruda, Mary Ackers and George Arruda. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday (3/27) in Holy Trinity Parish Church followed by a committal service at Notre Dame Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Aguiar, Ronald Pacheco, Michael Arruda, Jay Campbell, Joey Cleary and John Soares.
