James A. Wilcox, 74, of Bowie, Maryland, formerly of Fall River, former husband of Senola Smith, passed away peacefully at Prince George's Medical Center after a period of declining health. Born in Long Beach, California, he was the son of the late James Albert and Margaret (Ney) Wilcox. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a lab technician for many years. He loved sailing, fishing, and dogs. A strong advocate of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's, he was instrumental in providing housing and basic needs for hundreds of migrant farm workers in Florida. Besides his longtime companion, Sofia Smith, he leaves: his sister, Mary E. Ziepniewski of Tiverton; nieces, Elizabeth Logue and her husband, Kevin, of Situate, MA and Jennifer Ziepniewski and her husband, Robert Innis, of San Francisco, California; his childhood friend, Nick Nickerson; and several cousins. His services, under the direction of the Silva-Faria Funeral Homes, were private.
