Obituary

Jamiel P. "Big Jim" Attar, 86, of Fall River, passed away on July 9, 2010 at the Somerset Ridge Center following an extended illness. Born in Fall River, son of the late Peter and Margaret (Joseph) Attar. As a young man, he trained pigeons for racing and was a successful lineman for the Fall River Rough Riders football team. A World War II and Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a Purple Heart Recipient. Jim worked for the City of Fall River Dept. of Public Works until his retirement. He was a member of the Lebanon American Society, the D.A.V. and the Lebanese American Veteran Association, Sgt. Philip Sabra Post. Survivors include brothers, Toffee Attar of Fall River, George Attar of Hemstead, NH, Albert Attar of Somerset and Henry Attar of Swansea; sisters, Lorraine Ridgeley of Upper Marlboro, MD, Gerry Ellery of Salt Lake City, UT and Jeannette Halliwell of Sacramento, CA; and many nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Nassiff Attar, Samuel Attar and Alice Zitano. His funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Anthony of the Desert Church. His committal service with Military Honors was conducted at Notre Dame Cemetery.
