Obituary

Attorney Jeremiah Vincent Luongo, 89 years young, of Fall River, husband of Joan Rita (Fielding) Luongo, passed away peacefully with his loving wife by his side on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Sarah S. Brayton Nursing Home. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Antonio Luongo and the late Elizabeth (Hughes) Luongo, he also resided on Gardner's Neck Road in South Swansea for many years. Jerry was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

After serving in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Jeremiah earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Providence College, where he proposed to his sweetheart, Joan Fielding, in Harkins Hall – and they were wed in the winter of 1958.

With his J.D. from Suffolk University, Jeremiah started his law career as a public defender in Fall River, where he became a well-respected defense attorney. He was a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Knights of Columbus.

Founder of the John E. Boyd Center for Child Care and Development in Fall River, Atty. Luongo was a kind and gentle man dedicated to helping others, and often provided pro bono services to those in need. A wonderful wordsmith with a great sense of humor, he could always make you laugh with uniquely erudite eloquence. Jerry was an avid runner and both he and Joan always pursued a healthy lifestyle. He also had a great love for music and enjoyed singing along with others who appreciated the old standards.

Besides his wife of 66 years, he is survived by: Nancy B. Luongo Fielding (spouse Anna Torikian) of Bristol, RI, Timothy J. Luongo (life partner Jackie Murphy) of Tiverton, RI, Jennifer J. Luongo of Fall River, Jamie S. Luongo (life partner Mark Elliott) of Middletown, RI, Deirdre J. Lucas (husband Bradley) of Brookline, MA, and Justin A. Luongo (life partner Sumi Rich) of California; a sister, Elizabeth Neutz of Norfolk, VA; two grandchildren, Abigail M. Fielding and Brittany J. Lavoie (husband Kyle); two great grandchildren, Avery and Zachary; and several nieces and nephews. Jeremiah was also the brother of the late Atty. Antonio R. Luongo, Jr.

Following a private cremation, His Memorial Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, October 21st, at Holy Name Church followed by a private committal at St. Patrick Cemetery both in Fall River.
