Jerome D. Marques, 81, of Fall River, beloved husband of Gilberta (Pavao) Marques, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Southpointe Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center after an extended illness. Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Fernando Marques and the late Maria dos Anjos (Melo) Marques. He earned a Master's Degree in linguistics from Boston University.
A foreign languages and ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher in the Fall River Education System for many years, Mr. Marques served as Director of its Bilingual Program, and as Chairman of the Foreign Language Department at BMC Durfee High School, retiring in the mid-1990s. He was a former member and officer of the Portuguese Cultural Society and the Coimbra Club. Mr. Marques was also a moderator and guest on early television shows Passport to Portugal and The Portuguese Around Us. In his retiring years he ran an antique shop in Rehoboth, called Sleepy Hollow Antiques. He also volunteered and taught foreign languages at the Holy Name School of Fall River. Mr. Marques also sang with the Espirito Santo Church Choir for numerous years.
Besides his wife, of 57 years, he is survived by: a daughter, Catherine Messier (husband Jeffrey) of Fall River; two grandsons, Marc & Matthew Messier, both of Everett; his niece, Patricia (Marques) Fitta; and many other niece & nephews. He was also the brother of the late Joseph Marques. In addition to his family, he leaves a number of beloved friends including: Mr. Mauro Sari, of New York, who was like a son to him; Mr. Joseph Raposa, a former and cherished student; and his long-time friend and colleague, Mr. Luis Reis.
His burial arrangements were private. A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later time. Please omit flowers.
