João Dos Reis Araújo, known as "Capinha," 88, of Fall River, husband of Gilda (Carvalho) Araujo, passed away on Friday, February 4, 2022, at St. Anne's Hospital. Born in Pilar Bretanha, St. Michael, Azores, a son of the late Agostinho de Araújo and the late Leonor Alves dos Reis, he emigrated to Fall River in 1967.
He worked for about 25 years at Quaker Fabric. A devout Catholic and parishioner of Espirito Santo Church, João was a member of its Holy Name Society. He loved gardening and tending to his grape vines. João also enjoyed watching hockey and soccer games, especially Brasil and Portugal when playing for the World Cup. He was also an avid fan of Sao Paulo Futebol Club in Brasil (aka Sao-Paulino).
Besides his wife, of 62 years, he is survived by: three children, John Araujo (wife Susan), Marcia Costa (husband Mario), and Nelson Araujo all of Fall River; seven siblings, Maria Correia, Augusto Araújo, Evaristo Araújo, Maria Helena Medeiros, Leonor Araujo Ferreira, Luis Araujo, and Lurdes Ferreira all of Brasil; seven grandchildren, Stacy Araujo, Eric Araujo, Nikki Araujo, Shandi Costa, Scott Costa, Kayla Pacheco, and Destiny Cadoico; three great grandchildren, Stella Costa, Sage Costa, and Hadley Pacheco; and many nieces and nephews. He was also a brother of the late Jose Araújo and Manuel Araújo.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, February 11th, in Espirito Santo Church followed by his committal at Notre Dame Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Joao's memory to Espirito Santo Church, 311 Alden Street, Fall River, MA 02723; 508-672-3352
