Joao M. Barbosa, age 60, lost his battle with cancer at home, with his loving family at his bedside, on Saturday, July 14, 2012. He was the husband of Ilda (Medeiros) Barbosa. Born in the village of Capelas, on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, he was a son of Maria Isabel Barbosa of Fall River, and the late Hermano Barbosa. Residing in Fall River since 1972, he was employed for many years at the former Main Street Textiles. Joao was a communicant of Espirito Santo Church on Alden Street in Fall River and a member of the Portuguese Madeirense Sports Club on Webster Street where he enjoyed playing cards. Although he was an avid fan of Sporting Clube de Portugal, his favorite pastime was spent in the company of his family. His greatest joy was his eight grandchildren. In addition to his wife and mother, surviving family members include his three daughters; Elizabeth Pillsbury (husband Frank) of Fall River, Janice B. Pacheco (husband Jason) of Westport, MA, and Kimberly B. Carreiro (husband Brian) of Fall River, three brothers; Liberio Barbosa of Somerset, MA, Hermano Barbosa of Capelas, and Jacinto Barbosa of Fall River, three sisters; Salvina Rego of Somerset, and Osvalda Medeiros and Lourdes Carvalho, both of Fall River, eight grandchildren; Cody, Taylor, Mackenzie and Brady Carreiro, Morgan and Mason Pacheco, and Madison and John Pillsbury. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass with his cremains was celebrated in Espirito Santo Church on Alden Street on Saturday, July 21.
