Joao P. "Sardinha" Goncalves, 72, of New Bedford, formerly of Edmund St. in Fall River, died peacefully after an extended illness at Brandon Woods Nursing Home on September 20, 2008. He was the husband of Margarida (Moreira) Goncalves, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage. Born in Remedios, St. Michael, Azores, son of the late Joao & Conceicao (Pereira) Goncalves. Prior to his emigration to the U.S. in 1973, he owned and operated a barbershop in Ponta Delgada. He worked for the former Chace Leather, was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Parish Church and was a member of the Madeirense Club. Survivors include a son, Sidonio Goncalves (wife, Lori) of Fall River, daughter, Maria Fatima Arruda (husband, Duarte) of Fall River, brother, Luis Pereira Goncalves of St. Michael, sister, Teresa Borges of Fall River, grandchildren, Andrew, Kayla, Jesse, Ryan – U.S.M.C. and Alyssa, and several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Antonio and Jeremias Goncalves. His funeral Mass was celebrated in Holy Trinity Parish Church. Pallbearers Tony and Joe Costa, Jose Luis and Christopher Borges and Andrew and Tony Arruda brought Joao to his final resting place at Notre Dame Cemetery.
