Joao C. Mota, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at the Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of the late Maria Helena (Pacheco) Mota and also the husband of the late Maria Filomena (Estrela) Mota. Born in the village of Calhetas, on the island of St. Michael in the Azores, he was the only son of the late Jose Cabral Mota and the late Maria Mota. After residing for sixty one years in the Azores, where he worked the family farm, he moved to Fall River in 1974. Joao was a communicant of Espirito Santo Church and also a communicant of Santo Christo Church. Surviving family members include his five sons, Jose Mauricio Mota of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, Heitor Mota of Corroios, Portugal, Nuno Mota and Teofilo Mota, both of Tampa, Florida, and Antonio Mota of Lisbon, Portugal, two daughters, Emanuela Mota of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and Maria L. Aguiar of Somerset, MA. He also leaves many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Mota was predeceased by his sisters Olivia, Maria de Lurdes, Fernanda, Maria do Carmo and Maria Augusta. His funeral Mass was celebrated in Espirito Santo Church. Pallbearers were Ed Malloy, Gerald Loranger and Paul Pacheco. Committal service was held at Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.
