Obituary

Joaquim Francisco, 89, of Fall River, husband of the late Maria Fernanda (Henriques) Francisco, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, September 13, 2025. Born in Ferreira do Zêzere, Portugal, son of the late Jose Francisco and the late Maria do Carlo Maia, Joaquim emigrated to Fall River in 1970 with a steadfast dream to give his wife and children a better life.

Leading up to his retirement, Joaquim was a gifted and dedicated landscaper who loved his profession. His passion for creating beauty outdoors carried naturally into his personal life, where he nurtured his own yard and gardens to provide for and entertain family and friends. An avid gardener with a true green thumb, he delighted in tending grapevines and crafting his own wine, taking deep pride in growing the food and drink he shared with loved ones.

His beloved wife, Maria Fernanda, lovingly prepared the meals that showcased his harvest, and, in time, their daughter Mary gently embraced this cherished tradition. Rich and Laura consistently helped Mary keep these family traditions alive, a reflection of the enduring values of love and togetherness their parents so deeply instilled.

Family was Joaquim's greatest treasure. He cherished his children—Laura Bouchard (husband Raymond), Mary Nientimp (husband Gerald), and Richard (Ricardo) Francisco (significant other Kelly Chouinard) of Swansea—whose love and devotion filled his life with joy. He reveled in laughter and storytelling with family and friends, delighting them with jokes and tales as rich as the wine he poured. In later years, he was blessed with the companionship of Aida DaCunha, a dear and special lady who shared more than a decade of friendship and care with him, adding warmth and happiness to his life.

Above all, Joaquim's heart belonged to Maria Fernanda, his beloved wife of nearly forty years. His dearest wish was to rest beside her, and that wish will now be fulfilled. His children will carry his cremains to their birthland of Portugal, where husband and wife will once more be side by side, their earthly love celebrated in the afterlife.

Joaquim is also survived by five cherished grandchildren—Megan Pacheco (husband Jonny), Devan Francisco (wife Samantha), Benjamin Nientimp, Richard Francisco, and Samuel Nientimp—and by three adored great-grandchildren, Layla, Stella, and Sofia. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews and was predeceased by three siblings.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, September 18th, in Espirito Santo Church. A private cremation followed. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Joaquim's memory to the "Darcy Nientimp Scholarship Fund," c/o St. Anne's Hospital, 795 Middle St, Fall River, MA 02721.

Joaquim deixa ainda cinco queridos netos — Megan Pacheco (marido Jonny), Devan Francisco (esposa Samantha), Benjamin Nientimp, Richard Francisco e Samuel Nientimp — e três amadas bisnetas: Layla, Stella e Sophia.
