Obituary

John Sebastian Viveiros DeAguiar of Swansea, MA, age 99, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday morning July 19, 2025. John was born on January 20, 1926 in Remedios da Bretanha, São Miguel, Acores. He emigrated to the United States in 1956 where he met his wife Mary (Miranda) DeAguiar and enjoyed 68 years of marriage raising three children.

He was employed by J. D'Amico of Randolph, MA for 35 years as a heavy equipment operator and crew supervisor, working on projects such as Interstate 495, the Hull Sea Wall, the Somerset Reservoir, and the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Retiring in 1991, he enjoyed spending time with his family and beloved grandchildren. He loved being outdoors, going on neighborhood walks, tending to his garden and grapevines, taking great pride in his homemade wine. He derived immense happiness in using his Portuguese ingenuity in repairing and repurposing household items in creative ways. One of his favorite pastimes was documenting family history and get-togethers with hours of videos – first with 8mm and progressing through the years to digital video. He was also an avid fan of the Boston sports teams spending many joyful hours watching games and yelling at the television.

John had a strong work ethic and even stronger family values, when combined, allowed him to provide a good and loving home for his wife and family which enabled him to provide immigration sponsorship to many of his siblings and their families to join him in this Country. He was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. John of God Church in Somerset, MA, serving as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.

John is survived by his loving wife, Mary and their three children, Marianne Robinson (husband Dennis Robinson) of Fall River, MA, Christine Demers (husband James Demers) of Somerset, MA, and John J Aguiar (wife Holly Aguiar) of Holly Springs, NC. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Sarah Oliveira (husband Tiago Oliveira) of Dighton, MA, Patrick Robinson (wife Samantha Robinson) of Fairhaven, MA, Miranda Demers of Tiverton, RI, and Nathanial Aguiar of Holly Springs, NC and one great-grandchild, Theodore John Robinson of Fairhaven, MA.

He is also survived by his brother, Manuel Teodoro Aguiar; sisters, Maria Theresa Dias, Margarida Brum, and Mariana V. Aguiar Marto; along with many loving nieces and nephews.

John ass preceded in death by his parents Manuel Jose Aguiar and Mariana (Viveiros) Aguiar, his brothers, Jose Maria Aguiar, Antone Jose Aguiar, and his sisters, Maria Ascencão Oliveira and Mariana Clara Sousa.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, July 25th, 2025 at St. John of God Church in Somerset followed by his committal at Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.
