John "Bob" G. Arruda, 93, of Portsmouth, RI, husband of the late Olivia "Cuddles" (Camara) Arruda and the late Lillian (Duval) Arruda, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 in the comforts of his home after a long illness. Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Francisco Arruda and the late Josephine (Gonsalves) Arruda.
Prior to his retirement in 1988, he was a Nursing Assistant at the Brockton VA Hospital for over twenty-seven years. He also worked at the Silva-Faria Funeral Homes as a Funeral Attendant for over fifty years retiring from there in 2015. A WWII Marine Veteran, he bravely and proudly served his Country, stationed in the Pacific, Guam, China and Japan. A proud citizen of the Fall River community and a long-time member of the Senior Division at the Boy's and Girl's Club where was an avid handball player, Bob also enjoyed running in multiple half marathons and one full marathon. He also loved playing the game of "cribbage," listening and singing the many legendary songs of Frank Sinatra, his many trips to the casinos, and traveling to such places as Florida, Los Vegas, St. Martin, and Atlantic City. Bob loved his family greatly and enjoyed spending time with his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was an incredible example to his family, always a role model in his wisdom, compassion, love and respect for others and was always willing to help a friend or family. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. But most notably and cannot be impressed on enough is that John lead by example.
He leaves: his loving and devoted daughter, Nancy Arruda Nary and his son-in-law, Ed Nary, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; his five grandchildren, Nathan Nary (wife, Stephanie), Liam Nary, Genna DeCastro (husband, Matthew), Olivia Nary, and Brian John Bouchard, Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Raelin Nary, Hunter Nary, and Dean DeCastro; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Joanne Bouchard, and her husband, Brian, and was the brother of the late Charles Arruda, Manuel Arruda, Mae Carvalho, Genevieve Sousa, and Gabriela Arruda.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, August 16th, in St. Anthony of Padua Church followed by His Committal Service with Military Honors at St. Patrick Cemetery in Fall River, where he was laid to rest with his late wife, Olivia.
