Obituary

John N. Tavares, age 68, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2011, at his home in Somerset, Massachusetts, following a brief illness. Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Arthur Tavares and the late Sophie (Bogacz) Tavares. A resident of Somerset for most of his life, he enlisted in the United States Army shortly after graduating from Somerset High School. He was a self employed marine technician and an avid boating enthusiast. A highly skilled craftsman, John was well versed in every aspect of marine repair and restoration. He enjoyed working on all types of watercraft, if it could float, he could fix it. John was an active member of the Silver City Baptist Church in Taunton and also a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Surviving family members include his two sons; John N. Tavares, II, of Fall River, and Michael Tavares of Somerset, two daughters; Audrey Lariviere of East Taunton, and Robin Carvalho of Swansea, a brother, Arthur Tavares of Dartmouth, MA, three sisters; Myra Dias of Margate, Florida, Madeline Bernier of Somerset, and his twin sister, Joan Dias of Dartmouth. He also leaves eleven grandchildren, Michael, Vanessa, Joseph, Sara, Logan, Julia, Connor, Cassidy, Aidan, Ava and Ella, and several nieces and nephews. John was also the brother of the late Russell Tavares. His Funeral Service was held on Monday, September 26, in our Somerset chapel followed by his committal with military honors at Nathan Slade Cemetery on Prospect Street in Somerset.
