Obituary

John Martins Tavares, 74, of Fall River, husband of Beatrice (Costa) Tavares, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, June 16, 2025. Born in Sao Vincente Ferreira, St. Michael, Azores, he was a son of the late Manuel Natal Tavares and the late Maria Conceicao (Martins Doval) Tavares.

Prior to his retirement he was co-owner of the Ilha Verde Restaurant for many years. An avid Benfica fan, he also loved attending and cheering for his granddaughters soccer games. He enjoyed cooking for his family, traveling to such places as the Azores and Las Vegas, and cruises, just recently returning back from a 51-day South American cruise. He was president of the Santo Christo Club and long-time member of the Border City Club. Most importantly, John enjoyed spending quality time with his family, especially his granddaughters who were the "light" of his life.

He leaves his loving family, Sarah McEvoy and her husband, Robert, of Newport, Rhode Island, and Daniel J. Tavares of Fall River; his two precious granddaughters, Leah McEvoy and Kate McEvoy; his siblings, Manuela Simoes and her husband, Carlos, of Dighton, Antonio M. Tavares, Natalia E. Lourenco and her husband, Paulo, and Arthur M. Tavares and his wife, Ana, all of Fall River; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Maria Manuela Tavares.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, June 23th, in St. Michael Church followed by his committal at Notre Dame Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate to Beacon Hospice Care, 1 Father Devalles Blvd, Ste. 407, Fall River, MA 02723
