Obituary

Jorge S. Couto, 58, of Somerset, partner of Deborah Mello, passed away on Friday, November 26, 2021, at Charlton Memorial Hospital after an illness. Born in Ponta Delgada, St. Michael, Azores, a son of the late Victor Couto and the late Alda M. (Sousa) Couto, he emigrated to the Fall River area in 1972, and lived in Somerset most of his life.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Conflicts in Lebanon and Grenada in the early 1980s, Jorge served his country honorably for many years straight after graduating high school. He was employed as a letter carrier with the U. S. Postal Service for over 30 years.

Jorge lived his life to the fullest, was always positive and spent time doing what he loves: hiking, biking, taking walks with his dog, and listening to music. In 2020 with the birth of his granddaughter, Adeline Burns, she quickly became his whole world. Jorge will be remembered for his contagious smile and his selfless, kind, and amazing personality.

Besides his partner and granddaughter, he is survived by: two children, Allison J. Couto (fiancé Daniel Burns) and Nicholas Jorge Couto (partner Amanda Demetrio) both of Middleboro; eight siblings, Victor, Louie, Isabel, Dina, Mica, Saozinha, Eduarda, and Paula; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Preceding him on his journey to heaven, along with his parents, are his nephew, Paul Labao, and his pets, Dillon & Colt, all whom he now reunites with. As he leaves us these parting words: "Now just one wish, celebrate my life not my death. Don't worry, be happy."

His funeral arrangements were private. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jorge's memory to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284; 800-525-4669; www.dana-farber.org/gift
