Jose 'Rosalina' Estacio, 83, of Fall River, passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Mariana Ascencao Estacio for over 54 years. Born in Ajuda Bretanha, Sao Miguel, Azores, son of the late Franciso & Maria Roselina Estacio. He also lived in Brazil for many years and was an avid fan of fishing and soccer. Beloved father of Rosa Prates (companion, Cido), Jose Estacio (wife, Marcia), Felipe Estacio (wife, Teresa), Stacy Oliveira (husband, Joe), and Patricia Viveiros (husband, Louie) , brother of Manuel Estacio, Francisco Estacio and the late Maria Pimental, Mariana Freitas and Tiogo Estacio, grandfather of Mike, Kevin, Vanessa, Brandon, Amanda, Justin, Garrick, Jarred, Lexie, Skyla, and Lucas, great-grandfather of Tatiana, Daylece, Kambryss, Jaelynn, Tristen, Brandon, Jr., Dylen, Shane, and Kadin. On Thursday, friends and family honored Jose with a funeral Mass at Espirito Santo Church. After the service, Jose was laid to rest in Notre Dame Cemetery.
Eulogy: I would like to take this time to tell about my Father-in-law, Jose. He was a loving father, husband, and grandfather to all of us. He always loved being in the kitchen cooking the food, we as a family enjoyed eating together. He was known for his Famous "Fajou Assaud," that no one ever made as well as he did or ever will.
He would begin each day bringing my mother-in-law a cup of coffee in bed. He would then start his daily walk. He would always walk to his brother Francisco's house, where he would spend time with him and his niece Margarita. Jose would then stop at Marcelins before going to Lindos. He would place his bags on the counter once he got there, order his drink, and play a game of either cards or dominoes, and always had to be home by noon to watch his novellas with his wife.
We all agree that his favorite time of the year was always during the holidays. Each year we would always gather on Christmas Eve at my father and mother-in-law's house. We would start on the first floor to eat the foods he loved to cook. We would all have to be there on time because he always wanted us to eat as a family. In the beginning, we would all fit comfortably at that one table. There were so many of us as the years went by that we had to take turns to eat. I do not think he ever thought that cooking for his family on Christmas Eve would not only be his children's but his grandchildren & great-grandchildren's favorite memory of him and the start of tradition.
We thought last year was going to be our toughest holiday. He went into the hospital and insisted on being home for the holidays. No one was going to tell him deffierent! Not only was he in the hospital, but my mother-in-law was too. She did not get home until Christmas Eve. His daughters spent the whole day cooking, in hopes that it was going to be just as good as his food (but it still was not his cooking). At that time, we all thought that was our worst Christmas. What we would do now to have that back. This year will be nothing without him.
Jose's children had hundreds of great memories of their time with him. Tica always remembered him asking her when she was younger: "Who do you love more, me or Mommy?" Her reply each time was the same: "Daddy I love you both equallt," knowing that it was not the answer he wanted to hear. He always wanted her to say: "Of course it's you Daddy." When she was about 10 years old, she would pretend to be sleeping on their car rides home so he would carry her from the car up 2 flights of stairs to the 3rd floor. She did this so her daddy would always tuck her into bed.
Stacy always talks about the time Tica was supposed to chaperone one night when Joe came over. Jose walked into the house and caught her and Joe kissing on the couch. He told Joe at that moment he was going to marry his daughter! Joe was so scared of him that he got up and ran to the door. Stacy never and will never again see Joe run that fast.
Filipe could not stop and think of just one memory of his father, it was more of the quality time they spent together. He loved the fact that they both enjoyed the same things. They always loved to fish and watched soccer together. Filipe would also be right there with his father whenever he worked on the vinha or the garden. They spent these quality times with each other, but one thing Filipe wanted to share was not something they had in common, it was more of a constant battle. Jose loved Benfica, Filipe loved Sporting.
The brothers would always get together to tease their father. They would always do something and then tell their father that he couldn't do it as good as they did. Which they knew would drive father crazy because he always wanted it to be known that he could do anything they could and better.
Zelius wanted to share a memory that he had of his father in Brazil. Jose used to work on a farm called Citio do Silvo Caldas that Ze also used to work with him. He had so many different memories of the two of them shared together. He also used to help his father make his wine every year. Zelius would always tease his father telling him that his wine tasted awful and it was no good. This would get my father-in-law very upset. He always said that his wine was always the best and no one would tell him different.
Rosa always thinks about how he used to work 3rd shift, but always made sure he took the time each day to play with her and all of her siblings. He made sure there was never a day that went by and they would not play. He was also very protective of his fruit, and always knew when she was sneaking in the backyard to take his figs.
I could only imagine being married to someone for over 54 years, and then having to stop and think of one fond memory. However, she always remembered the day they met. They were at the feast of the Day of Kings in Portugal, when he saw her. When she left the feast that day, he followed her to ask if she was dating anyone. She replied "No" and left it at that, and since that day, he would come by the house to see her. This eventually turned into not only a relationship but also a marriage. In reality, they have been together for over 59 years. Not only was Jose her husband, but also her best friend. They did practically everything together. Every time he would come home from the hospital, she would not stop kissing him with joy that he was home.
Although he has left his family on Earth, we all know that he is now at peace with his parents, brothers, sister, and niece. We are all going to miss him deeply, but take comfort in the fact that he will be watching over us.
