Obituary

Jose R. Costa, 80, of Fall River, husband of Maria E. (Araujo) Costa, died peacefully at home on Tuesday July 5, 2016. Born in Fenais da Luz, St Michael, Azores, son of the late Antonio R. & Maria L. (Ferreira) Costa, he emigrated to Brazil in 1956, then to Fall River in 1964, and became a US citizen in 1969. A construction foreman retiring in 2000 from Modern Continental of Boston, he had also worked for 25 years with Merit Equipment. A longtime member of Our Lady of Light Society, a founding member & director of Our Lady of Light Band, he was also president of St. John's Holy Ghost for many years and the 1st president of the Great Feast of N.E. He was a recipient of the Portuguese Heritage Award. Jose had a passion for making Portuguese wine, enjoyed traveling, and loved spending time with his grandsons and family. Besides his wife, of 46 years, he leaves: a daughter, Elizabeth C. Caetano (husband Jon) of Westport; 2 brothers, Antonio F. Costa (wife-Connie) of Florida, Manuel F. Costa (wife-Maria-Jose) of Fall River; 3 sisters, Assuncao Almeida (late husband-Joao) of Mississauga, Canada, Natalie Amaral (late husband-Jose) of So. Kingstown, RI, Esmeralda Hermenegildo (husband-Silverio) of Fall River; 2 grandsons, Tristan & Ethan; several nieces & nephews. He was also father of the late Christine Costa; and brother of the late Louis Costa. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, July 8th, St. George Church, Westport, followed by his committal at Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.
