Obituary

Joseph S. Amaral, Jr., 82, of Tiverton, RI, husband of Elaine M. (Roy) Amaral, passed away on Friday, June 12, 2020 at Hathaway Manor Nursing Home, New Bedford. Born in Fall River, the son of the late Joseph S. Amaral and the late Elisa (Ciarpella) Amaral, he resided in Fall River most of his life.

A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam Era, he was proud to have honorably served his country for 20 years on the USS Charles H. Roan, the USS Arcadia, and the USS America, retiring as Chief Petty Officer. For a time he was also an Instructor of Boiler Technology in Newport, Rhode Island. He was later employed in the maintenance department at Charlton Memorial Hospital for over 22 years.

He enjoyed participating in the hospital's bowling league and playing golf, but mostly he enjoyed traveling with his wife. An affable personality, Joseph was always quick with a humorous story, often related to his military history, and was known as the go-to, can-do positive energy for his family.

Besides his wife, of 62 years, he is survived by: a son, Paul J. Amaral (fiancée Kathy Higgins) of Ventura, California; a daughter, Karen E. Brain (husband Kenneth) of Swansea; a sister, Lisa Ford of Shreveport, Louisiana; a granddaughter, Jenna Wood; and several nieces & nephews.

Due to the Covid pandemic, Joe's private funeral service was held on Friday, June 19th, in our Fall River Chapel followed by his private committal with military honors at Notre Dame Cemetery.

When the current crisis has abated enough for large gatherings to again take place, Joseph's family is planning to arrange for the offering of a Memorial Funeral Mass at Espirito Santo Church, to which extended family, friends and the public will be invited – and details will be announced here.

Family members are always grateful for relatives and friends wishing to share in-person kindness and support. But because of the pandemic, we are all urged to express sympathy online or by mail.

To ensure that said condolences reach the family, please always make sure that submissions online are made directly through the funeral home's website ( www.silvafaria.com ) and not through a third party. Thank you!

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Joseph's memory to: Alzheimer's Association, MA/NH Chapter, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452; (617) 868-6718; https://www.alz.org/manh/about_us/contact_us
