Joseph F. Kirkman, age 84, of Swansea, Massachusetts, passed away at home on Thursday, July 30, 2009, following a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Janice M. (Duffy) Kirkman. Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late William H. Kirkman and the late Catherine (Green) Kirkman. A resident of Swansea since 1955, he was the proprietor of the Old Mill Coffee Company. Founded in Fall River by Mr. Kirkman in February 1944, he relocated to Swansea in 1970, and in May of 2008, after operating the company for sixty-four years, he closed the business. An active community volunteer for youth activities, Joe was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, coached in the Swansea Jr. Basketball League, a manager of the Dodgers and former president of Swansea Little League Baseball, and a member of Case High School's Friends of the Cardinals. In addition to Janice, his wife of sixty years, family members include two sons, Jeffrey J. Kirkman and Michael Kirkman, both of Swansea, a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Kirkman of Annapolis, Maryland, two brothers, William H. Kirkman, Jr., of Somerset, and Eugene M. Kirkman of Albuquerque, New Mexico, a sister, Sister Barbara A. Kirkman, S.U.S.C. of Fall River, five grandchildren, Erin B. Almeida of Taunton, MA, Megan F. Worsham of Burlington, MA, Cailyn E. Kirkman of South Boston, Christopher M. Kirkman of Fall River, and Nicholas J. Kirkman of Swansea, and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Thomas Kirkman, Isabel M. Kirkman, John C. Kirkman and Marilyn M. Wheeler. His Funeral Mass was offered on Monday, August 3, at St Francis of Assisi Church in Swansea. Committal services followed at Mount Hope Cemetery.
