Joseph W. Silvia, age 87, of Somerset, Massachusetts, passed away in Fall River on July 8, 2014, following an illness. He was the husband of Patricia (Pacheco) Silvia. Born in Somerset, he was a son of the late Caesar Silvia and the late Maria (De Viveiros) Silvia. A lifelong Somerset resident, he was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army and a life member of the Somerset AMVETS Post 72. A skilled carpenter, Joseph was employed by various companies over the years until he was hired as a facilities manager at Portsmouth Abbey, retiring in 1990. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Somerset. In addition to his wife, Patricia, surviving family members include his two sons; Michael J. Silvia (wife Patricia) of Somerset, and Daniel F. Silvia (wife Cheryl) of Somerset, a brother, John Silvia of Somerset, a sister, Emma Medeiros of Somerset, three grandchildren; Pamela (Silvia) Biddick of Cambridge, MA, Kimberly (Silvia) Wajda of Swansea, and Kristin Silvia of Somerset, two great grandchildren; Cole Wajda and Samantha Wajda, both of Swansea, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Manuel Silvia, Josephine Correia and Deolinda Barboza. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, July 12, in St. Patrick's Church on South Street in Somerset followed by his committal with military honors at Nathan Slade Cemetery.
