Dr. Joseph V. Medeiros, 86, of Swansea, passed away Wednesday after a long illness. Beloved husband of Georgelina (Vieira) Medeiros to whom he was married for 58 years. Born in Fall River, son of the late Jose and Mary (Nogueira) Medeiros, upon graduating from BMC Durfee High School, he served in the U.S. Navy for 2 years. After the service, he attended Providence College and went on to Mass. College of Optometry from where he graduated Cum Laude and opened his practice here in Fall River in 1953. Affectionately known as "Doc", Joe was a member of the Lion's Club, Portuguese Cultural Society, Coimbra Club and the Ateneu Luso Club. An avid golfer, he belonged to Fall River and Crestwood Country Clubs for many years. Loving father of Joseph V. Medeiros (wife-Jeanine) and John E. Medeiros (wife-Ann Marie); grandfather of Matthew J. Medeiros, brother of Gloria Pereira, John V. Medeiros and the late Louis V. and Thomas M. Medeiros. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, October 6, in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Swansea, followed by his committal at St. Patrick Cemetery, Fall River.
