Obituary

Kenneth R. Almeida, 76, of Somerset, husband of Janis (Mello) Almeida, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, after a long illness. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Arthur Almeida and the late Alice (Wilson) Almeida, he resided in Somerset for the past 52 years.

A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam Era, he did two tours of duty and was proud to have served as part of the recovery team for the Apollo 11 astronauts in July of 1969 aboard the USS Goldsborough (guided missile destroyer).

He was employed in the printing business for many years, working with Quebecor of Providence for about 20 years. He retired in 2005 after 6 years as a clerk with the U. S. Post Office of Westport. He enjoyed Mopar muscle cars and travelling (Aruba was his "second home"). Ken was an assistant baseball coach for the Somerset Youth Minor League. He was also a great Oakland/Vegas Raiders football fan. Ken especially appreciated every moment with his grandson, Mitchell, enjoying donuts, coffee and watching reruns of Fast & Furious and cowboy movies.

Besides his wife, of 51 years, he is survived by: two children, Kelli A. Bowers (husband Timothy) of Somerset and Kenneth R. Almeida, Jr., (& Trish) of Fall River; a brother, Arthur Almeida of Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y.; a grandson, Mitchell Bienvenue; several cousins and a niece. The family thanks South Coast VNA Hospice staff for their wonderful care.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, February 8th, in St. Patrick Church followed by his committal with Military Honors at Nathan Slade Cemetery, both in Somerset.
